What Does It Mean If My Car Is Smoking and Losing Power?

Dana Kraft • September 14, 2026

When your car smokes and loses power at the same time, there’s a good chance you’re having problems with your oil system or fuel delivery.

We've worked on plenty of vehicles with this exact issue at our South Austin shop, and we've found it stems from one or many of the following issues: a faulty PCV valve, a weakening fuel pump, and oil circulation problems, which is what we found in a Chevy Camaro that recent came to the shop.

  • Issue: Engine smoking and losing power together
  • Root Causes: PCV valve malfunction, fuel pump degradation, oil circulation failure
  • Solution: Oil service, PCV maintenance, fuel pump inspection, brake fluid flush, electrical verification
  • Location: South Austin

Our certified technicians ran a thorough diagnostic on this customer’s Camaro and addressed each issue directly: oil service, PCV valve work, fuel pump inspection, brake fluid flush, and electrical system checks.

Once we're done, their engine was running properly again and their power was back to normal.

Have You Noticed These Symptoms in Your Vehicle?

When a customer brought their 2010 Chevrolet Camaro to us it was smoking and losing power. We knew something serious was happening under the hood.

We've seen this problem in Camaros at our South Austin shop, and it often means multiple systems are struggling. If you ignore it, your engine could suffer serious damage before long.

The important thing is catching these symptoms early so you can fix them before they escalate.

Watch for these warning signs:

  • Visible smoke or steam coming from under the hood (usually blue-gray, indicating burning oil)
  • Loss of engine power when accelerating or driving on the highway
  • Difficulty maintaining speed above 45 mph
  • Burnt oil smell accompanying the smoke
  • Check Engine light or oil pressure warning light coming on

What these signs mean:

  • Engine smoking can mean oil is reaching hot engine parts, often from a broken PCV valve or bad oil seals.
  • Power loss could indicate your fuel isn't reaching the engine properly or that there's too much friction inside from insufficient oil.

If you're experiencing one or more of these symptoms, our diagnostic check can identify the real problems and prevent further damage.

Complete Inspection of The Customer’s 2010 Chevrolet Camaro

To figure out what's actually wrong, we performed a detailed inspection using OBD-II diagnostic scanning and hands-on examination of critical systems.

Our diagnostic approach, refined through long-tenured experience with similar cases at our South Austin location, involves a comprehensive review of all components that could be causing your vehicle's poor performance.

This thorough process takes time, but it allows us to identify the real problems rather than just treating symptoms, so we fix what actually needs fixing.

Our inspection revealed multiple issues in this case:

  • Oil system condition: We examined your oil quality, circulation through the engine, and potential leak points. We found your oil wasn't maintaining proper viscosity at normal engine temperature.
  • PCV valve functionality: We tested how well your crankcase pressure is being managed. We discovered excessive pressure was forcing oil past your valve cover gaskets.
  • Fuel delivery system: We inspected your fuel pump and measured its pressure output. We found the fuel pressure was reading well below the manufacturer's specification.
  • Ignition and electrical systems: We checked your spark plugs and electrical components using an OBD-II scanner.
  • Brake system integrity: We inspected your brake fluid and safety systems to ensure everything was safe to work on.
  • Supporting systems: We reviewed your air conditioning and other systems that could affect vehicle performance.

By identifying each problem, we developed a repair plan that would address both performance and reliability.

How We Fixed This Customer’s Smoking and Power Loss

To resolve the smoking and power loss in this 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, our ASE-certified technicians followed a systematic repair approach:

  1. Oil System Restoration: We performed a complete oil change using high-quality full synthetic oil that met Chevy’s specifications. This resolved the oil-related smoking and ensured the engine received proper lubrication to prevent further damage.
  2. PCV Valve Service: We inspected and replaced the PCV valve, which controls crankcase pressure and prevents oil from leaking into the combustion chamber. Our testing showed the original valve was stuck partially open, creating excessive pressure. Replacing the PCV valve, in this case, directly stopped the smoking.
  3. Fuel System Inspection and Service: We performed a complete fuel pump inspection and verified fuel pressure was below the correct level. We also replaced the fuel filter and checked injector spray patterns. This step ensured the engine received adequate fuel, which directly resolved power loss.
  4. Brake System Maintenance: We completed a full brake fluid flush and refill, ensuring the braking system functions perfectly and remains safe throughout the repair.
  5. Electrical and Safety Systems Verification: We checked the brake lights, cleaned and tightened all electrical connections, and confirmed no fault codes remained in the system.
  6. Complete System Evaluation: We performed a full air conditioning check and reviewed all other systems to identify any additional issues affecting vehicle performance.

By addressing each problem through this systematic repair process, we restored the Camaro's engine function, eliminated the smoking, restored power, and verified all safety systems work properly. Additionally, the vehicle is now backed by All Tune's nationwide 2 Year / 24,000 mile warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions About Power Loss

What should I do if my engine is smoking and losing power?

Stop driving immediately and have a professional inspect your vehicle. This combination of symptoms could point to serious problems, possibly involving your oil system, PCV valve, or fuel delivery system as they did in this case we worked on. Based on our experience with similar cases, continued driving risks severe damage and safety hazards.

What can I expect during the diagnostic process for smoking and power loss?

During diagnosis, we perform a comprehensive inspection using an OBD-II scanner, fuel pressure gauge, and visual examination of your oil system, PCV valve, fuel delivery system, ignition and electrical systems, and brake system. This allows us to identify all problems rather than just treating symptoms. We charge a diagnostic fee, which we credit toward repair costs if you choose our service.

Why should I invest in a complete oil system service and PCV valve maintenance?

These services can help prevent costly engine damage and extend your engine's lifespan. A complete oil change with PCV valve service can stop smoking, restore proper lubrication, and prevent future problems. While there's an upfront cost, it may save you from thousands in potential engine replacement or major repairs later. We've seen customers avoid serious engine damage by addressing these issues early.

Squeaky brakes could mean many things, bring it to our experts to figure things out
By Dana Kraft August 20, 2026
Squeaky brakes are one of the most common reasons Austin drivers call us, and it usually means more than just noise. We recently worked on a 2020 Ford Escape SE that had already had its rotors resurfaced previously, but the squealing came right back a few months later. When we took a closer look, we found worn brake pads, glazed rotors, and brake fluid that had picked up contamination along the way. Fixing this customer’s brakes for good meant replacing the front and rear brake pads and rotors, flushing out the old fluid for fresh Ford OEM fluid, and road testing everything in line with our diagnostic assessment. The owner drove away with quiet, responsive brakes and their safety restored. What Our Brake Experts Found on This Ford Escape Just like your baby at home, that squeaking noise is your car's way of telling you something in the brake system needs attention. This particular Ford Escape had already given its owner trouble once, back when they bought it from CarMax with freshly resurfaced rotors. When the squeal returned, it became clear the whole brake system needed a real look, not just another quick fix. Our inspection and diagnostic work showed that this Ford Escape needed a complete brake system overhaul to clear up the squealing and get its braking back to where it should be. We found brake pads worn down to about 2mm of friction material, well past the 4mm safety minimum. We found glazed and damaged rotors that had lost their even friction surface from heat and contamination. And we found brake fluid that had absorbed moisture and picked up metal particles from the worn components, which was quietly reducing how well the hydraulic system could do its job. When only one part of a brake system gets addressed, the rest of the problem tends to resurface, sometimes literally. Our ASE-certified technicians treated this as a full system job rather than a single-part fix, because that's really the only way to get quiet, reliable braking back for good. Full Brake System Restoration on a Ford Escape To fix the squeal for good, our technicians lifted the vehicle and did a detailed inspection of every brake component, measuring pad thickness and checking the rotor surfaces closely. From there, we replaced the front brake pads and rotors on both sides, making sure everything was aligned, torqued to Ford's specifications, and fitted with properly seated anti-rattle clips. We did the same careful work on the rear brakes, checking the parking brake adjustment and confirming proper clearance throughout. Once the new components were in, we flushed out all of the old, contaminated brake fluid and refilled the system with fresh DOT 3 fluid that meets Ford's specifications. From there, we ran the vehicle through a full quality check: road testing braking response, stopping distance, and noise at both highway speeds and simulated emergency stops, along with an electronic diagnostic scan to confirm the brake sensors, ABS components, and electronic brake distribution were all working within manufacturer specs. We also gave every new part a final visual check and confirmed the wear indicators were functioning correctly. The result was a Ford Escape that stopped quietly, confidently, and safely, the way it should have all along. Common Questions We Get About Squeaky Brakes What should I do if my brakes are squeaking? Of course, we recommend getting them inspected by a professional. Until then, try to limit driving until it's been checked so you don't risk further damage or an accident from your brakes giving out. Give us a call and we'll get you scheduled as quickly as we can. How does brake fluid contamination affect braking? Brake fluid can pick up moisture over time, which may reduce how well your brakes perform and can lead to rust inside the system. Contaminated fluid can weaken hydraulic pressure, which may make your brakes feel less responsive and harder to predict. What does a full brake system restoration involve? It typically starts with lifting the vehicle and doing a close visual inspection of all the brake components, measuring pad thickness and checking the rotors. From there, technicians replace the front and rear brake pads and rotors, making sure everything is properly aligned and torqued. The last step is flushing the brake fluid and running road and diagnostic tests to confirm everything is working the way it should. Why does preventive brake maintenance matter? Regular brake inspections can help you avoid a surprise emergency repair and keep your car stopping reliably when you need it to. Catching wear early tends to mean safer driving, longer-lasting parts, and lower costs overall. We generally recommend an annual brake inspection for most drivers, or closer to every 6 months if you're regularly in heavy traffic. How can I prevent brake squealing in the first place? Getting your brakes inspected at least once a year is a good baseline, more often if you're commuting through heavy traffic regularly. This is an easy thing to do every time you get your oil changed. How can I tell if my brake pads are worn out? Most vehicles have built-in wear indicators that start to squeal once the pads get thin, generally somewhere around 2mm of material left. You might also notice weaker braking power, a softer pedal, or longer stopping distances. Rather than waiting for those signs to show up, a regular inspection can catch wear early and help you avoid a bigger repair down the road. Brake Repair in Austin You Can Count On Here's what years of working on brakes around Austin has shown us: staying ahead of brake wear is one of the simplest ways to protect both your safety and your budget. Regular inspections tend to catch problems while they're still small, often before you'd ever hear a squeal. Vehicles that get consistent brake attention are far less likely to end up in an emergency repair situation, and that peace of mind matters just as much as the mechanical side of it. Regular maintenance is what keeps your vehicle running well and keeps you safe on the road. At All Tune South Austin, we offer complete brake repair for drivers across Austin and South Austin, backed by ASE-certified technicians who've worked on the brakes of hundreds of local vehicles using the same careful standards we applied to this Ford Escape. If your brakes are squeaking, don't wait for it to get worse. Call us at 512-243-8666.
